Welcome back to the Authority Builder Podcast! If you’re feeling burnt out from trying to “do LinkedIn right” in the world of service-based business, you’re not alone. Maybe you’ve been posting all the time, trying to stay visible, and yet… you’re still hearing crickets. If that sounds familiar, this post is for you. Today, I’m busting the myth that posting content actually leads to consistent clients, especially if your offer is upwards of £5,000 (about $7,000 or more).
Let’s get honest about what really works.
Why Posting Isn’t Bringing You Clients
We’ve all heard the advice: be visible, post consistently, add value. And yes, these things can help build trust over time. But here’s the truth that rarely gets said out loud: visibility does not equal more clients. Being visible to the same people over and over again doesn’t grow your business. Most of your audience already knows what you do. If they were going to hire you, they probably would have done so by now.
Posting content is a visibility strategy, but if you’re looking for more clients, you don’t need more visibility—you need more conversations.
The Power of Conversations Over Content
The most time and cost-effective way to get more clients is to start more conversations. I’m talking about direct, one-to-one conversations with new people. You don’t get these by waiting for someone to comment on your post—you need to reach out to them directly.
When I work with clients inside our LinkedIn Lead Liftoff programme, we don’t touch content at all. Instead, we use LinkedIn as a search engine to find exactly the right people, and then we start warm conversations that actually lead somewhere. No ads, no viral posts—just smart, intentional outreach.
Treat LinkedIn Like a Telephone, Not a Megaphone
Here’s the shift I want you to make: stop treating LinkedIn like a megaphone and start treating it like a telephone. Focus on having one-to-one conversations with the right people, and you’ll make far more progress than you would by posting endlessly.
For nine of the last ten years at Caffeine, I haven’t posted more than twice a year on LinkedIn. Yet, LinkedIn was the only way we were growing our client base—through those one-to-one conversations. Only recently, as we’ve moved into a scaling phase, have we started posting more and using ads. But for years, it simply wasn’t necessary.
Is Content Worth Your Time?
If no one is engaging with your content, it’s really not worth spending all your marketing time on it. Instead, focus on setting up a system—ideally an automated one—so you’re not manually doing everything. This system should start one-to-one conversations with people you know are the right fit for you.
Want to Learn How to Do This?
If this approach sounds good to you and you want to see how to do it step by step, I’m teaching it live in a free class: Three Simple Ways to Get Leads from LinkedIn Without Content or Ads. It’s exactly what it says on the tin—practical, directive, and packed with actionable steps.
