Why bother building authority (Tony interviews Charlotte)
Before we get into the heart of this conversation, a quick note: this is the second half of a long podcast episode with my business buddy, Tony Rulli. If you haven’t listened to the first half yet, I highly recommend you do—it’ll set the stage for everything we discuss here, especially as we get into more practical, actionable strategies.
Tony and I kicked things off by talking about his weekly newsletter, The Spark Report. While it’s packed with value, I challenged Tony on whether he’s actually overdelivering in a single email—so much so that it could be split into several shorter, more frequent updates. In today’s world, where attention is scarce, breaking content into bite-sized pieces can help you stay more present and consistent with your audience.
Tony asked whether he should start with a podcast or a book. My advice? For most agency owners, coaches, or consultants, a podcast is the way to go. It’s not about building a massive audience overnight. Instead, it’s about facilitating valuable conversations, rekindling relationships, and staying front of mind with your network. The beauty of a podcast is that it can open doors to new clients and collaborations, often in unexpected ways.
One of the biggest mistakes I see is people seeking perfection over completion. Don’t stress about having the perfect jingle or editing out every “um” and “ah.” The human moments are what make your content relatable. The key is to get your reps in—batch record a handful of episodes, get comfortable, and let the process become a habit.
The real value of a podcast isn’t just in the number of downloads. It’s in the relationships you build and the content you can repurpose. Every episode can be turned into multiple pieces of content—social posts, email newsletters, blog articles, and more. Plus, when you interview guests, you tap into their audiences as well, expanding your reach organically.
Your podcast doesn’t have to be strictly about your core service. It should be something you’re genuinely interested in and that your audience will find valuable. For example, Tony’s agency, Intentional Spark, could focus on the “intentional spark” behind successful marketing campaigns, interviewing creators and business owners about the strategies that helped them grow.
Every conversation you record is a goldmine for content. Transcripts from podcasts, webinars, or even sales calls can be turned into blog posts, FAQs, and social media snippets. This not only saves you time but also ensures you’re consistently visible to your audience.
Worried you’ve missed the boat on starting a podcast or writing a book? Don’t be. The best time to start is now. Even if your audience is small, the connections you make and the authority you build will pay off in the long run. Consistency and visibility are what matter most.
If you’re inspired to start your own authority platform—whether it’s a podcast, a book, or something else—remember: it’s about showing up, being human, and sharing value. Don’t let perfectionism hold you back.
